Cortijo in Jaen Region, Authentic off-grid country house in protected nature reserve (Sierra de Las Villas, Jaén)
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in the lush, lesser-known interior of Andalusia—far from the busy tourist hotspots along the coast—you'll find one of Spain’s most expansive protected natural areas: the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park. Covering 210,000 hectares, it's the largest of its kind in the country. Located in the province of Jaén in northeastern Andalusia, the park gained official status as a natural reserve in 1986 due to its rich diversity in plant and animal life. Since then, it has also been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a Special Protection Area for birds under EU legislation.
Within this enormous reserve lies the Sierra de Las Villas, the most remote and least explored part of the park—and also where the house is situated. This hidden gem is traversed by the Guadalquivir River, the longest in Andalusia. The landscape features a striking mix of rugged mountains, verdant valleys, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear rivers and pools. It’s a sanctuary of unspoiled nature, home to a wide variety of wildlife and stunning plant life. On clear days, you might even catch sight of the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada in the distance.
